Vegan Doner kebap in pita with a vegan yoghurt sauce
To make the doner I used braised tofu. It comes in a tin and I often take it with me when I go on holidays because I don't need to chill it and it easily fits into my luggage. Braised tofu is very versatile and I use it for many different dishes - from quick vegan pastas to tofu scrambles.
And for the yoghurt sauce I only used soy yoghurt (or any plant-based yoghurt you like), some garlic and salt, super easy.
Have fun making this recipe!

That's what the finished kebap looked like. I didn't have red picked cabbage at home which you can get with kebaps normally but you sometimes get it with red onions and that worked really well.

Just add all ingredients and serve, super easy and fun to do!

Fry the doner ingredients in a pan until almost crispy. The braised tofu worked really well and gave it a great consistency.

The vegan doner was gone in a very short time, everyone loved it!
INGREDIENTS (2 vegan doner kebaps:
Vegan doner ingredients:
- 1 tin of braised tofu (drained)
- 1/2 finely chopped onion (keep some for the filling)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika powder
- 1/2 garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp mild chili powder (or to taste)
Soy yoghurt dressing ingredients:
- 4 tbsp of soy yoghurt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Dash of salt
Filling ingredients:
- Salad
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced cucumbers
- Sliced onions rings
- Chilli sauce (e.g. Sriracha sauce)
METHOD:
Drain the liquid from a tin of braised tofu (I get mine either at the health food store or from Amazon). Add some oil to a hot pan and fry the tofu with all other doner ingredients for a few minutes until it gets almost crispy.
To make the soy yoghurt sauce mix up 4 tbsp of soy yoghurt (or any other plant-based yoghurt you prefer), add 1/2 tsp of garlic powder (or minced garlic) and season to taste with a dash of salt.
Toast a pita bread and then slice open. Fill it with salad leaves, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and sliced onion rings, add the vegan doner ingredients and then top with soy yoghurt sauce and some chilli sauce. Any unsweetened chilli sauce will do - I used Sriracha sauce which tasted great). Enjoy!
And if you like comfort food as much as I do why not try my vegan sausage recipe.
